Laura San Giacomo was born on November 14, 1962 in West Orange, New Jersey, to John and MaryJo San Giacomo. Her father owns a paper mill and she is of Italian descent. Laura grew up in Denville, New Jersey and attended Morris Knolls High School, where she fell in love with acting.
After high school, she proceeded to CarnegieMellon School of Drama in Pittsburgh from where she graduated in 1984 with a degree in fine arts. To begin her career, Giacomo moved to New York where she began performing in theater productions and receiving rave reviews for most of her roles. In order to realize her idea, she founded the inclusion school CHIME Charter Elementary School in Woodland Hills, California, which is for children with special needs. The school which opened in 2001 has grown exponentially and now has over 700 students from kindergarten through eighth grade.
Laura San Giacomo married her current husband, Matt Adler in 2000, two years after her divorce from ex-husband Cameron Dye was finalized. Like Laura, this was Matt’s second marriage. He was married to actress Ria Pavia from 1993 to 1995. Giacomo’s husband is best known for his films in the 1980s including; Teen Wolf, Summer White Water, and the North Shore. He is very good friends with George Clooney with whom he lived.
Giacomo and his family reside in San Fernando Valley, California. His other notable family member is his cousin Torry Castellano, a former drummer for rock band The Donnas. She retired in 2010.
