Sundar Pichai, a prominent Indian-American business executive, is currently serving as the CEO of Google and Alphabet Inc. He was born and raised in Madurai, India, and holds a degree in metallurgical engineering from IIT Kharagpur, an M.S. in materials science and engineering from Stanford University, and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In 2004, Pichai joined Google and played a significant role in leading the product management and innovation efforts for several of Google’s products, including Google Chrome, Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Maps. He was appointed CEO of Google in 2015 and later stepped into the same position at the completion of the formation of Alphabet Inc. Pichai comes from a Tamil Brahmin family, and his mother worked as a stenographer while his father was an electrical engineer at GEC, a British conglomerate. His father also owned a manufacturing plant that produced electrical components. Pichai completed his schooling in Ashok Nagar, Chennai, and Vana Vani school at IIT Madras. He is a distinguished alumnus of IIT Kharagpur.
Pichai started his career as a materials engineer and later joined Google after a brief stint at McKinsey & Co. He has contributed significantly to the development of several Google products, including Android, Google Chrome, and Google Maps. Pichai was responsible for releasing the Chromebook in 2012 and for introducing the new video format, WebM, and open-sourcing the new video codec VP8 by Google in 2010.
